Brampton firefighter killed in Caledon collision

A 50-year-old Brampton firefighter has died following a motor vehicle collision in Caledon, the OPP says.

It happened on Highway 10 between King Street and Boston Mills Road around 4:15 p.m. Friday.

Police say the driver of the vehicle was travelling in the southbound lane when for unknown reasons; he entered the northbound lanes, striking a truck.

Howard Hughes of Orangeville was pronounced dead at the scene.

Brampton fire chief Andy MacDonald confirmed to CityNews Hughes was a 23-year veteran of the force and was the lead piper in the honour guard.

Hughes was a father of two and popular among his fellow firefighters.

The driver of the truck was hospitalized with critical injuries.

The OPP is investigating.
