Firefighters rescue woman, dog from North York apartment fire

Firefighters rescued a woman and her dog from an apartment fire in North York on Wednesday.

Crews were called to an apartment on Jane Street, near Wilson Avenue, around 2:30 a.m. for a balcony fire. The call reached second-alarm status when the flames started to move into the unit.

Firefighters pulled a woman in her 60s and her pet dog out of the apartment. The woman is recovering after she was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation. The dog was given oxygen in a fire truck.

There was a “substantial” amount of personal belongings in the apartment, officials said, which caused a problem for firefighters.

Toronto Fire said the fire was likely caused by improperly discard “smoker’s articles” – matches or cigarettes.

The cost of the damage is estimate at $60,000.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office is investigating.
