Investigation begins after Oshawa asphalt fire

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office will investigate the massive blaze at an Oshawa asphalt plant over the weekend that could be seen from several kilometers away.

The fire began at McAsphalt Industries Ltd., at the foot of Farewell Street near the lakefront, around 5 a.m. on Saturday. It burned for more than 12 hours, with firefighters giving the all-clear around 8 p.m.

No one was injured, but homes and businesses in the area were evacuated as a precaution.

There’s no word yet on the cost of the damage.

There were concerns the smoke was toxic, but Ministry of the Environment testing showed that was not the case.

The Ministry will also monitor the cleanup.
