Leafs forward Lupul says decision to sign long-term deal was easy

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul says the decision to sign a long-term deal with the NHL club was an easy one to make.

Lupul weighed in on his new five-year contract extension on Monday after the Leafs skated at Air Canada Centre ahead of their home opener against the Buffalo Sabres.

He says it’s nice to have some security and he’s happy to be staying in Toronto.

Lupul averaged over a point a game last season, recording 25 goals and a career-high 42 assists and 67 points.

The extension is worth US$26.25 million and runs through the 2017-18 season.

Toronto acquired Lupul and defenceman Jake Gardiner from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Francois Beauchemin in February 2011.
