‘Coronation Street’ actor charged with sexually assaulting a child

An actor on the popular British daytime soap opera Coronation Street has been charged with 19 counts of sexual assault, including raping a child.

Michael Le Vell, whose real name is Michael Turner, is also accused of indecently assaulting a child and sexual activity with a child, according to the BBC.

Le Vell, 48, plays Kevin Webster. He has appeared on Coronation Street since 1983. The alleged offences took place between 2001 and 2010.

He has been suspended from the show, an ITV spokesman told the BBC.

“Given the serious nature of these charges, Michael Le Vell will not be appearing in Coronation Street pending the outcome of legal proceedings.

“It would not be appropriate for us to comment further at this time,” the spokesman said.

Le Vell will appear in court on Feb. 27.

The charges arrived in the wake of another child abuse scandal. Former BBC star, the late Jimmy Savile, is now said by police to be one of Britain’s most prolific sex offenders.
