Jays’ Melky Cabrera addresses past performance-enhancing drug use

Melky Cabrera issued a statement ahead of his expected arrival at Toronto Blue Jays camp, saying he will co-operate with Major League Baseball’s probe into his ties to Biogenesis but would not further discuss his use of performance-enhancing drugs due to legal counsel.

“I have put my mistakes behind me, have learned my lesson, and have served my punishment,” the statement read. “I am here to play the best baseball I can to help the Toronto Blue Jays win a World Championship.”

Cabrera served a 50-game suspension after testing positive for testosterone last August, spoiling what had been a career season for the outfielder. He was leading the NL batting race at the time but eventually asked to have his name withdrawn from the race.

He did not return to the San Francisco Giants once his ban was over as the club went on to win the World Series.

“I am very happy that my former teammate Buster Posey won that award instead of me,” Cabrera said in Friday’s statement.

Cabrera signed a $16 million, two-year contract with the Blue Jays in November but has yet to meet with the media. Other than through statements, he has also yet to discuss publicly what led him to use performance enhancing drugs.
