Police identify teen killed on Jamestown Crescent

A teenage boy who was shot dead in the city’s west end on Sunday night has been identified as Jarvis Montaque.

Montaque, 15, was a Grade 10 student at nearby Father Henry Carr high school.

“It’s a sad day for us,” Sammy, a friend of Montaque’s family, told CityNews.

“We are all grieving right now. He was a brilliant, quiet young man…He didn’t have too many friends but he talked to everyone.”

Police said he was shot on Jamestown Crescent, near Martin Grove Road and Finch Avenue, around 11 p.m and pronounced dead in hospital.

A group of people, including Montaque, were standing outside the townhouse complex on Sunday night when a man approached the group. The man shot Montaque “at close range,” police said.

He then returned to the sidewalk and fled the area.

The suspect has been described as a person dressed all in black.

Police will provide an update on the investigation at an 11 a.m. news conference on Tuesday. Toronto police also released the following video on YouTube describing the case and asking for witnesses.

Toronto Community Housing president and CEO Gene Jones said he was “extremely saddened” about Montaque’s death.

“We extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to the family and friends of Jarvis Montaque and the Thistletown 1 community,” Jones said in a statement.

Jones said the TCHC would be cooperating with police and would provide security camera footage. The TCHC has also sent support staff to the area.

“For another young person to lose his life this way is not just tragic, it is unacceptable.  Gun violence affects everyone in the city, and more must be done to get guns off the streets of Toronto,” Jones said.

“I think it’s time for the violence to stop,” Sammy agreed.

Montaque is the fourth minor to be fatally shot this year.

Tyson Bailey, 15, was shot to death inside an apartment on Whiteside Place, near Dundas and River streets, on Jan. 18.

Kesean Williams, nine, was killed when a bullet pierced through his family’s Brampton home on Ardglen Drive on Jan. 23.

St. Aubyn Rodney, also 15, was shot at 40 Turf Grassway, near Jane Street and Finch Avenue West, on Feb. 11.

And a 17-year-old boy is recovering in hospital after he was shot near Jane and St. Clair on on Saturday.

An earlier version of this article had an incorrect spelling for the last name of Jarvis Montaque.
