Women’s fight to headline UFC event for first time in history

History will be made Saturday night when a women’s fight headlines a major UFC event for the first time.

UFC 157 will have Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey defend her title against Liz Carmouche in the main event in Anaheim.

UFC President Dana White had previously said that women would never compete in the UFC, so having Rousey and Carmouche fight is a complete 180 for the brash UFC boss.

That change can be primarily attributed to the success and character of Rousey herself.

Rousey has drawn a large following over the last several years as the good looking and well-spoken fighter dominated her competition, going 6-0 with all the wins coming by first-round armbar.

Her opponent Carmouche will also make history, as the former marine is the first openly gay competitor on the UFC’s roster.

Preliminary fights are free on Sportsnet with the pay-per view event starting at 10 p.m.
