Jack Layton Way unveiled in Toronto’s east end

A street in Toronto’s east end has been renamed to honour the late NDP leader and former Toronto city councillor Jack Layton.

Guests who attended the unveiling of Jack Layton Way on Sunday included city councillor Paula Fletcher, Layton’s wife Olivia Chow and son Mike Layton.

The attendees met at Jack Layton Way near Gerrard Street East and Broadview Avenue and they took their first walk on the street at noon on Sunday.

“It is very fitting that we have a menacing jail full of despair and fear and having transformed to a place where there’s healing, where there’s hope [and] where there’s lots of love,” Chow said. “That is so much the Jack Layton Way…”

Layton died in August 2011 about a month after disclosing he had developed a second form of cancer.

The new street replaces the Don Jail Roadway, which leads to the Don Jail, as part of the redevelopment of Bridgepoint Health.

Jack Layton Way will be open to the public beginning Monday.
