‘Oz the Great and Powerful’ tops weekend box office

Oz the Great and Powerful topped the weekend box office, raking in US $80.28 million.

The haul set a record for 2013, according to movie-tracking website boxofficemojo.com.

The Disney film is directed by Sam Raimi and is considered a prequel to The Wizard of Oz.

“The movie is live action interspersed with CGI,” actor Zach Braff – who voices the animated monkey – said on Breakfast Television last month.

“It’s in the spirit of how they did Gollum [in Lord of the Rings]. I’m on set, acting, and they’re videotaping me from three different angles. The animators take that footage – of my face and my gestures – and they create the character.”

In second place at the box office was Jack The Giant Slayer, which took in $10 million. Last week the movie, based on the Jack and the Beanstalk and Jack the Giant Killer fairytales, debuted with $28 million.

It’s had a weak opening, considering the 3D movie cost $189 million to produce, plus tens of millions more to market.

Identity Thief, starring Bridesmaids’ Melissa McCarthy as a fraudster who steals Jason Bateman’s identity, took in $6.3 million.
