Ex-Mountie arrested in weapons raid at Bancroft home

Two people, including a retired RCMP officer, are facing hundreds of charges after police seized 67 weapons from a Bancroft home.

“This is quite a formidable collection of weapons,” Durham region police Insp. Mario Lessard said at the Ontario Provincial Police Downsview detachment on Tuesday morning.

“As police officers, we never want to see this kind of firepower in one place. It tends to attract attention,” he said.

OPP and Durham police say guns and ammunition were found in the walls of the Spooks Bay Lane home last Thursday.

Another cache – including homemade manufactured assault rifles and pistols with no serial numbers – was found in the garage, police said.

The Department of National Defence had to be called in to help remove anti-personnel landmines, grenades, detonator cords and blasting caps, and officers say they also found Tasers, crossbows and a 32-inch cannon on the property. Machining equipment was also seized.

David Alan Kift, 55, faces multiple weapons charges and has been remanded into federal custody.

Marion Kift, 53, also faces multiple weapons charges and was released on bail.

David Kift remained in custody because he violated his parole conditions, police said.  He had retired from the RCMP in 1996 and has been prohibited from owning weapons since 2008.

The investigation is ongoing.
