MGM holds job fair for proposed Toronto casino

MGM Resorts International put its proverbial chips on the table ahead of a city council vote on its proposed casino.

The vote on whether to allow a casino in Toronto happens in May, but MGM held a job fair at Exhibition Place on Saturday.

Representatives from several different fields, including human resources, hotel operations, food and beverages, IT and security, were on hand to meet with those in attendance.

“Folks have an opportunity to come down and meet with people who work in those areas. Find out what kinds of jobs exist and what working conditions are like, what kind of an employer MGM is” Alan Feldman, senior vice-president of public affairs for MGM Resorts International told CityNews.

The operator claims the resort it wants to build on the Exhibition Grounds will bring 10,000 jobs to the city.

However, Brian Ashton, president of the Canadian National Exhibition, told CityNews he felt the move was premature.

“It’s rather presumptuous,” said Ashton. “They appear to be inviting hopeful job seekers to roll the dice for jobs that don’t exist.”

Ashton said he felt the job fare was less about providing work for the people of Toronto and more about politics.

“It’s kind of a cynical publicity stunt to pressure council into saying that MGM has the best proposal for a casino in Toronto,” he explained.

MGM Resorts International held a career session on Saturday to provide more information about job opportunities should their bid be voted on and selected.
