‘Oz’ tops weekend box office for 2nd-straight week

Oz the Great and Powerful topped the weekend box office for the second straight week, raking in US $42.2 million according to movie-tracking website boxofficemojo.com.

The Disney film is directed by Sam Raimi and is considered a prequel to The Wizard of Oz.

In second place was Halle Berry’s The Call, which took in $17.1 million. The film follows Berry, a 911 operator, and former child star Abigail Breslin as a teen who calls in the middle of a kidnapping.

Jim Carrey’s return to the screen, as a street magician in The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, took in $10.3 million for third place. The comedy also stars former Office actor Steve Carell and Steve Buscemi.

Box Office Mojo said the debut was one of the worst-ever for both Carell and Carrey, and “noticeably lower” than Will Ferrell’s movie Semi-Pro. That movie bombed with a $15.1 million opening in 2008.

Last week’s second- and third-place movies dropped to fourth and fifth, respectively, with Jack The Giant Slayer taking in $6.2 million and Identity Thief making $4.5 million.
