New charges in 2012 murder of aspiring Toronto rapper

Toronto police have laid new charges in last year’s murder of an aspiring Toronto rapper.

Anthony Spencer, 23, was fatally shot at a recording studio on Brimley Road near Lawrence Avenue on Jan. 21, 2012.

Samuel Paul, 22, who was already in custody for first-degree murder in the shooting , was charged during a Tuesday court appearance with aggravated assault and robbery while armed with a firearm.

Chever Ashley, 22, who was also already in custody, was charged Tuesday with aggravated assault, robbery while armed with a firearm and first-degree murder.

Ashley was initially charged with accessory after the fact, but that charge was upgraded to first-degree murder on Tuesday.

Police said the accused were in the recording studio with Spencer and his friends and robbed them of their belongings. During the robbery, Spencer was shot to death. The accused then fled.

A group of friends who police say were also in the studio drove Spencer to Scarborough General Hospital, dropping him off at the emergency ward before taking off.
