Clarington babysitter accused of sexually abusing infant

A Clarington man accused of sexually abusing a baby girl tried to kill himself during his arrest, Durham police say.

The man was babysitting the child who’s less than a year old on Monday night, and around 9 p.m. the parents noticed suspicious injuries and immediately called police.

The infant was transferred to Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, where she remains with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

On Tuesday, police tracked the accused to Whitby. During the investigation, an officer saw the suspect walking along Thickson Road North and approached the accused who produced a knife and slashed himself several times.

His injuries required immediate medical attention, police said. He was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital.

The 27-year-old man, whose name hasn’t been disclosed, was charged with aggravated sexual assault and remained in custody for a bail hearing.

Police are investigating.
