OPP launch Easter weekend seatbelt safety blitz

Ontario Provincial Police will be conducting a seatbelt safety blitz over the Easter long weekend and the fine for not buckling up is at least $240.

Officers will be watching for those not wearing seatbelts, in addition to impaired, distracted or dangerous drivers.

In 2012, it’s estimated eight people died on OPP-patrolled roads because they weren’t wearing their seatbelts.

“We want everyone to have a good weekend. We don’t want anyone to have to remember this weekend for the rest of their lives because someone died,” OPP Sgt. Kristine Rae said.

Police say some people stop wearing their seatbelts when there’s no snow on the road, but it’s still a risky move.

The minimum fine does not include any added insurance costs.
