Vintage TTC poster, map for sale

History buffs can now buy replicas of a vintage subway map and TTC ad, part of a larger move by the commission to sell transit-themed merchandise.

The posters depict the original 1958 subway map and a TTC ad which reads “Transit goes where the action is,” circa 1966.

The posters are $15 each (including tax) and the map is $10. Both are for sale at the TTC’s head office at Davisville Station.

“This is the first small step,” said TTC spokesman Brad Ross. “We’ll start slowly, but we’ll continue to add new things.”

He says an online store is in the works.

“When the system is looking at a subsidy level that has been frozen for two years … any potential revenue that you can bring in is a good thing,” Ross said.

It’s been about 15 years since the TTC had merchandise for sale, according to transit historian Ed Levy.

“It’s an image builder for the city. It’s an icon,” Levy said.

New York and London earn millions of dollars on transit merchandise each year.
