Toronto urologist honoured with Mark Dailey Local Hero Award

A Toronto urologist has been honoured for his work in prostate cancer research with an award by Prostate Canada Canada named after the late CityNews anchor Mark Dailey.

Dr. Rajiv Singal was presented with the Mark Dailey Local Hero Award on Wednesday morning. He’s the head of the urology division at Toronto East General Hospital and is involved in ongoing clinical research studies.

He also uses social media (follow him on Twitter here) to educate the public on prostate cancer and other urological diseases, and raised $45,000 during the 2012 Movember campaign.

Prostate Cancer Canada renamed its local hero award in 2011 in Dailey’s honour.

The reporter and anchor, long known as the voice of Citytv, became a vocal advocate for men’s health issues after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2004. He served on Prostate Cancer Canada’s board of directors.

Dailey chronicled his battle with the disease in his five-part series “Journey to a Cure” on CityNews. Watch it here.

He passed away in December of 2010, just months after announcing he had kidney cancer, which later spread to his lungs. He was 57.
