Police investigate after YRT arrest caught on tape

York regional police are investigating after a woman took video of a transit official detaining a customer.

It happened at the VIVA bus station at Highway 7 and Yonge Street on Friday.

The cellphone video shows a woman lying on the ground with the YRT officer’s knee against her back.

Angela Fava, who recorded the incident, told CityNews she thought the officer used excessive force.

“I’ve never seen a man kneeling on a woman’s back with all his weight before. That was the first red flag for me,” she said.

The incident was allegedly over a fare dispute.

Commissioner for York Regional Transit Kathleen Llewellyn-Thomas told CityNews all security video of the incident has been handed over to the police.

“I’ve seen the video and it is disturbing,” she explained.

The officer in question has been put on desk duty pending an investigation.
