Social media being used to catch serial bank robber

Police are using the power of social media in the hopes of catching an alleged serial bank robber known as the Vaulter.

Authorities allege the man, who earned his nickname by the way he jumps over the teller counters to get cash, is responsible for 17 heists in York and Peel regions, Hamilton, Ottawa and Calgary. The string of robberies started in 2010 and the latest happened Dec. 14, 2011, in Vaughan.

Police say the suspect is “armed and dangerous.”

On Wednesday, York police announced they’ve teamed up with cops in other affected areas to push the suspect’s image out on social media, including Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Pinterest.

The Canadian Bankers Association is also offering a $20,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.

“This suspect has committed 17 robberies across this country. Some of the videos and images are very clear and we know there are people who can identify this man,” York Det.-Sgt. Mike Fleischaker said in a statement. “By utilizing all of the tools available to share video and images of this serial bank robber’s face, we hope someone will come forward with information that will help us identify this suspect.”

The suspect is described as:

  • White, about 50 years old
  • Between five-feet-eight and five-feet-10-inches tall
  • 170 to 190 pounds with an athletic build
  • Grey, shaved or balding hair
