A man in his 40s was taken to hospital Wednesday morning after an industrial accident near Don Mills Road and Sheppard Avenue in North York.
The worker, a man named Nick, was doing yard work at a home under construction on George Henry Boulevard, when a mini-excavator flipped on an embankment and pinned him against a tree.
Coworkers and neighbours began their own rescue effort, using wood beams to shift the equipment and relieve pressure, before crews arrived.
“I could see the excavator on its side,” said neighbour Rob Bergevin.
“He said, ‘On the right side, the right side.’ He was feeling pressure. So he helped us.”
Nick wasn’t seriously hurt.
The Ministry of Labour is investigating.
