Police bomb squad called in after east-end discovery

Police were called to the Broadview and Danforth avenues area before dawn on Wednesday after old military ordnance was discovered in the trash outside an apartment building.

Officers arrived at 33 Eastmount Ave. around 4:30 a.m. where the Second World War shells were found near garbage containers. The items weren’t live.

The Toronto police Emergency Task Force explosives unit was called to the scene and the area was cordoned off for several hours. The investigation wrapped up around 8 a.m.

Police tell CityNews these types of incidents are happening more often, with people improperly disposing of keepsakes of late family members. Authorities advise anyone who has old artillery shells they’d like to get rid of to call police or the Canadian Forces Borden.
