10K runs in GTA honour Boston bombing victims

Runners in two 10-kilometre races in the GTA on Sunday paid tribute to the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.

Organizers of the Toronto Yonge Street 10K held a moment of silence before the race started.

They also printed optional bibs which say “Runners united in support” and show a blue ribbon to represent the cause.

About 7,000 people are taking part in the event.

Earlier, at the Oakville 10K at Appleby College, runners warmed up to Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline — a song played at all Boston Red Sox home games.

Last Monday, two bombs went off at the finish line of the iconic race in Boston, killing three people and injuring more than 180.

Authorities believe two brothers carried out the attack. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was captured by police after a day-long manhunt on Friday and remains in serious, but stable condition in hospital. His older brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, was killed on Thursday in a shootout with police.

The following road closures are in effect along the 10K route on Yonge Street:

  • Yonge Street between Erskine and Richmond
  • Richmond from Yonge to Peter
  • Peter Street/Blue Jays Way between Richmond and Front
  • Westbound Front between Blue Jays Way and Bathurst
  • Bathurst from Front to Fort York Boulevard
  • Fort York from Bathurst to Fleet (from 6 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.)
  • Westbound Fleet from Strachan Avenue to Fort York (from 6 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.)

After runners pass an intersection, it will reopen to traffic. Bayview Avenue and Avenue Road are possible alternatives.

TTC buses will also be diverting.
