Boston bombing suspect planned attack in New York City: Bloomberg

Authorities believe Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev planned to set off explosives in New York City’s Times Square, Mayor Michael Bloomberg says.

Bloomberg announced the development in the investigation at a news conference with police commissioner Ray Kelly in New York on Thursday.

“We don’t know if we would have been able to stop the terrorists had they arrived here from Boston,” he said.

“We’re just thankful we didn’t have to find out that answer.”

The FBI told Bloomberg and Kelly about the planned attack after talking to Tsarnaev.

Kelly said Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, who was killed in a shootout with police, had five pipe bombs and a pressure-cooker bomb in the SUV they stole in Massachusetts.

“They had built these additional explosives and we know they had the capacity to carry out the attacks,” Bloomberg said.

“If, God forbid, they had arrived in New York City and gone to Times Square, one thing for sure: they would have seen an enormous police presence, but they would not have seen the extensive network of cameras.”
