Dog’s decapitated head found in Pickering park

Durham regional police are investigating a possible case of animal cruelty after a decapitated dog’s head was found in a Pickering park on Sunday.

“The family has been notified,” Const. Chris Barkwell told CityNews on Monday.

“They’re devastated.”

Officers were called to Summer Park in the Finch Avenue and Altona Road area after a passerby found the partially decomposed head along with the dog’s collar. The head was cut off using a sharp tool, police say.

The family has a young child and the terrier, who went missing in January, was a gift. Barkwell said the family had put up posters around their neighbourhood and online, but to no avail.

No other dogs, or parts of dogs, have been found, police said.

The Durham Humane Society is calling for stricter penalties for animal cruelty convictions.

If a person is found responsible of animal cruelty, he she could face up to two years in jail, a $60,000 fine and a lifetime ban on owning animals.
