‘Iron Man 3’ kicks off summer blockbuster season

The summer blockbuster season kicked off on Friday with the wide release of Iron Man 3.

Robert Downey Jr. is back in the role of playboy-philanthropist Tony Stark, who saves the world with the help of a high-tech suit of armour.

The A-list supporting cast includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce and Don Cheadle, who was in Toronto this week for the Canadian premiere. The movie opened overseas last week, taking in a whopping US$195.3 million, and will likely make for another successful chapter for the film franchise.

But Downey Jr. says the Iron Man films are more than just special effects.

“It’s not leaning on [the effects] and realizing that is not what makes the movie good,” Downey Jr. said.

“There are hundreds of men and women who are the backbone of this franchise, and I tip my hat to them.”

Directed by Shane Black, Iron Man 3 pits the brash-but-brilliant industrialist Stark, Iron Man’s alter ego, against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed by his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a quest to find those responsible.

Stark is left to rely on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Paltrow, who was recently named People magazine’s Most Beautiful Woman, said she’s flattered by the attention her role brings her.

“It is so funny isn’t it?” she said. “I never would have thought that I would be in a comic book movie. It has been one of the best jobs of my life. I had such a good time working with Robert and all these amazing people.

“It is very funny that I will be known as being in Iron Man.”

Kingsley says while Iron Man 3 is based on a comic book hero, the action taking place on set is very serious.

“The leading man is amazing, as is the leading lady,” the Oscar-winning actor said. “So, you have the best working conditions that you can wish for, which means you have no excuses to get it wrong, which means you have to up your game.”
