2 in hospital after North York house fire

Two people are in hospital with severe burns after a house fire in North York on Thursday morning.

The three-alarm fire began in the kitchen and quickly spread to the back of the home and the deck, Toronto Fire’s platoon chief Tony Bellavance said.

Firefighters were called to Gordon Road, near York Mills Road and Bayview Avenue, around 1:40 a.m.

“Everything was progressing pretty quickly when firefighters arrived,” Bellavance said.

“There was a victim out on the lawn who said his wife was still in the house on the second floor and couldn’t come out. There was heavy smoke inside. There was flames licking over the roof. Everything was happening very quickly.”

An elderly man suffered severe burns to his upper body, while an elderly woman suffered severe smoke inhalation and burns.

The house was so full of smoke, Bellavance said, that two firefighters got lost and a mayday alarm was activated. The two missing firefighters were on the second floor when they became disorientated. They both had to crawl their way out of the home.

They were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

A number of neighbouring homes was evacuated as a precaution.

It’s not yet known what caused the fire or the cost of the damage.
