RCMP urged to probe $90K cheque Harper aide wrote to senator

The federal New Democrats are calling on the Mounties to investigate the actions of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s former chief of staff.

NDP MP Charlie Angus, the party’s ethics critic, has written to RCMP commissioner Bob Paulson asking the force to determine if Nigel Wright broke any laws by giving Sen. Mike Duffy $90,000 to help him cover the repayment of improper housing expenses.

Wright resigned early Sunday in an effort to douse the flames of a burgeoning Senate scandal.

His resignation followed that of Duffy, who left the Conservative caucus on Thursday facing a potentially humiliating showdown with his Senate colleagues.

Colleague Pamela Wallin, who is facing her own expenses audit, stepped down early Friday evening. Both senators are sitting as independents in the upper chamber.

The ethics commissioner is also looking into Wright’s repayment of Duffy’s expenses.
