Brampton man charged in 1991 sex assault of child

Toronto police have arrested a Brampton man in the decades-old sexual assault of a child.

It’s alleged that the man lured a nine-year-old girl and her five-year-old sister into his car from the lobby of their apartment building in the area of Warden and Danforth avenues on Feb. 3, 1991. He had asked them for help finding a place to eat.

A short time later, he dropped the younger girl off at a store on Victoria Park Avenue and drove the older child to a secluded place where she was sexually assaulted. He then dropped her off at a restaurant on Danforth.

Det. Ali Ansari of the sex crimes unit said the cold case was cracked because of the availability of new technology.

“In 1991 the DNA technology wasn’t where it is now. In fact it was nonexistent,” he said. “So with the advent of new technology we are able to solve these cold cases many, many years later.”

The victims, who didn’t know the accused, were relieved, he said.

“They were surprised and happy that there’s at last closure to what happened to them 22 years ago,” Ansari said.

Shane Garry, 45, of Brampton, was arrested Thursday and faces several charges, including two counts of kidnapping, two counts of forcible confinement and one count of sexual assault.

He appeared in court Friday morning for a bail hearing.

Police released three photos of Garry – one from December 1990, January 1993 and March 2013 – believing there may be other victims.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sex crimes unit (416) 808-7474 or Crime Stoppers.
