‘Fast & Furious 6’ tops weekend box office

Fast & Furious 6, the latest but not the last installment of the street-racing franchise, took top spot at the weekend box office.

The movie raked in US $ 98.5 million in its first weekend in theatres, according to Hollywood website boxofficemojo.com.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson joins Vin Diesel and Paul Walker in London as the crew reunites to stop criminal Owen Shaw (Luke Evans) from assembling a Nightshade device. They’re also trying to track down Letty Ortiz (Michelle Rodriguez), who, after the events of Fast Five, suffered amnesia and ended up on Owen’s side.

The movie ends with a look ahead to Fast & Furious 7, which sees the gang return to Tokyo.

The Hangover III also opened this weekend but it made significantly less than Fast & Furious 6. The latest Las Vegas escaped with Bradley Cooper and Zach Galifinakis took in $42 million, while Star Trek Into Darkness made $38 million.

Star Trek was the No. 1 movie last weekend, pulling in $70.6 million.
