Toronto crews spraying for Gypsy Moths

Toronto city crews have begun spraying for Gypsy Moths, a day after their efforts were delayed by the wind.

A two-engine helicopter was flying high above Etobicoke on Monday morning, spraying trees near Royal York Road and Eglinton Avenue. Some roads were briefly closed because the helicopters posed a “visual” distraction for drivers.

Officials say the city is spraying because infestation levels have reached a point where the usual manual control methods – like egg scraping, sticky traps and ground spraying of pesticides – are no longer effective.

The caterpillar of the Gypsy Moth eats the leave of the trees, making them more susceptible to disease and damage from other insects and bad weather conditions.

The spray being used doesn’t affect other insects and is not considered a health risk to humans.
