Whitby teen dies after drinking methanol in vodka bottle

A Whitby teenager has died after drinking methanol that was in a vodka bottle.

Durham police said the 18-year-old was drinking with several friends at a home on May 17.

One of the teens had brought what he thought was vodka to the gathering, but the blue fluid in the unlabeled bottle was methanol – not vodka.

Police said a 17-year-old boy also became sick and both teenagers were taken to hospital.

The boy underwent dialysis treatment and recovered. The girl was also treated, but slipped into a coma and died on May 22.

A third teenager, who also drank methanol, did not consume as much and was not taken to hospital.

No names have been released.

Durham police say that with prom season nearing, teenagers need to know about the dangers of consuming alcohol, especially alcohol from an unknown source or a tampered bottle.

Police have also issued a reminder that chemicals must be safely stored, and the most important factor in chemical storage safety is keeping chemicals in their original containers.
