A man is dead after a shooting in the Morningside Avenue and Finch Avenue East area Thursday afternoon.
The victim, a 37-year-old man, was found on Mantis Road. Family members say Surendra Vaithalingam was at home landscaping when two male suspects approached him and opened fire. He was shot in the chest and died at the scene.
Police tell CityNews they believe Vaithalingam was targeted but are unsure why. They say the husband and father to a four-year-old did not have a high-risk lifestyle.
Officers were called to the home around 3 p.m. after receiving a call reporting gunshots in the area.
Det. Sgt. Justin Vander Heyden said Vaithalingam was in the back yard when he was shot.
His brother-in-law was inside the home at the time and heard the gunshots. Police say he dragged Vaithalingam inside, called police and began performing CPR.
Vander Heyden said images of the suspects were caught on several security cameras in the area.
The suspects fled on foot to an getaway vehicle located on the next block.
Police say they are searching for three suspects.
The suspects are described as:
- Male, black in his 20’s wearing dark clothing and had a pony tail on the top of his head.
- Male, black about five-foot-four-inches tall. He was wearing dark clothing.
- Male, with a light brown complexion in his 20’s. He was wearing dark clothing.
