A Toronto councillor hopes her motion, which goes before council next week, will help prevent infanticide and find a home for unwanted babies.
Coun. Michelle Berardinetti wants the city to set up an angel cradle — a spot where mothers can drop off babies they are unable or unwilling to care for.
“There is a clear need for a safe haven drop-off facility for unwanted babies within the city,” Berardinetti said. “It’s the right thing to do for Toronto.”
It would follow similar programs in Edmonton and Vancouver which accept infants at anonymous havens in hospitals.
The children are then placed under the care of a welfare agency.
Earlier this week, police found the body of a baby girl they believe was killed by her own mother, Angelica Spanidis. The 25-year-old has been charged with first-degree murder.
Council will debate the motion next week.
