3 Whitby teens charged with truck theft in Oshawa

Three Whitby teens have been charged with theft of a truck after a police chase in Oshawa on Sunday left three pedestrians in hospital.

Around 2:45 a.m., Durham police got a call about a vehicle driving erratically near King Street West and Park Road. They said when they caught up with it, the driver sped away.

During a brief chase, the driver lost control and hit three pedestrians near the Oshawa Centre at King and Stevenson Road South.

A 39-year-old man, a 28-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman were taken to Lakeridge Health hospital with serious injuries. The 39-year-old man was later transferred to St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto.

All three remained in hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries on Monday.

The three teens – two 13-year-old boys and one 15-year-old boy – were charged with theft of a motor vehicle and possession of property obtained by crime on Monday.
Two of them were released into their parents’ custody.

The third, the 13-year-old driver, was additionally charged with three counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, failing to stop for police causing bodily harm and failing to remain causing bodily harm. He was released on Monday afternoon into his father’s custody and will live with him in Scarborough.

The boy is also under house arrest except when he must attend classes at school, the judge ordered. He’s also not allowed any contact with 12 people including the three victims, as part of his bail conditions.

The names of the accused will not be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The three will be in court again on July 2.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit, which probes all cases involving police when someone has died, has been seriously hurt or brings forward allegations of sexual assault, is also investigating.
