Thriller ‘The Purge’ tops weekend box office

Suspense thriller The Purge topped the weekend box office, taking in US $36 million according to movie-tracking website BoxOfficeMojo.com.

The movie imagines a future where all crime is legal for one night a year.

The Purge was produced for just $3 million and its debut was a record for an original R-rated horror, BoxOfficeMojo.com reported. It beat out The Devil Inside, which opened last year with $33.7 million.

Fast and Furious 6, which had dominated the box office for the past two weeks, dropped to second, taking in $19.8 million. The latest installment in the street-racing franchise is still going strong and became the second movie this summer to pass the $200-million mark, joining Star Trek: Into Darkness.

Now You See Me, a caper that follows magicians as they perform financial heists, took in $19.5 million for third place.
