Boy, 17, charged after deadly crash into Keating Channel

Police have charged a 17-year-old Toronto boy in connection with a deadly car crash into the Keating Channel earlier this year.

Around 5:30 p.m. on March 29, the teen was driving an Acura east on Lake Shore Boulevard at the Don Roadway when he lost control, crossed three lanes, crashed through a guardrail and plunged into the water.

One of his four passengers, 16-year-old AJ Blugerman, was trapped in the submerged car for about a half-hour and died later in hospital.

Blugerman was a student at Bayview Glen, a private school near Don Mills and York Mills roads, and before that went to the all-boys St. Michael’s College School, where he played hockey.

Everyone else escaped unharmed.

The driver, who can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has been charged with dangerous operation causing death and criminal negligence causing death.

He is due to appear in court on July 25.
