Doctors say public purse and public health at risk because of government cuts

Doctors say public health and the public purse are in danger because of cuts to refugee health funding.

The federal government overhauled the health care coverage it provides to refugees and refugee claimants one year ago.

And groups protesting across the country on Monday say the result has been a system thrown into chaos, hurting some of the world’s most vulnerable people.

The government argues the changes cut off access to generous benefits for those who make fake refugee claims just to get health coverage.

But advocacy groups point out the cuts also affect those who make legitimate claims and then find themselves with expensive medical bills they can’t pay.

Dr. Doug Gruner of Canadian Doctors for Refugee Care say that’s left provinces picking up the tab or ill refugees refusing to seek help.
