1.56M Jeeps recalled in U.S., Canada due to possible fuel-tank fires

Chrysler has recalled 1.56 million older Jeeps, including 180,000 in Canada, after initially refusing to do so.

The Canadian Press says the fuel tanks on the older-model Jeeps could burst into flames if rear-ended.

Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles between 1993 to 2004 and Liberty vehicles between 2002 and 2007 are part of the recall.

The U.S. government says 51 people have died because of the defect and had wanted 2.7-million Jeeps fixed.

Chrysler insists the cars are safe and has included the Jeeps outside of the recall in a “customer service action,” which means many might not be repaired.
