Harper promises help with Alberta’s flood efforts

Stephen Harper is promising Alberta Premier Alison Redford she’ll have Ottawa’s full support for rescue and recovery efforts as the province struggles to deal with heavy flooding.

The two spoke on Friday by phone and agreed to maintain close contact to ensure a co-ordinated response to the disaster.

Donations from corporations were also made to the Canadian Red Cross, which is helping residents, including $100,000 from Toronto-based Rogers Communications Inc. (Rogers is parent of CityNews and CityNews.ca.)

Rogers and Fido customers, who want to help, can make a $5 donation by sending a free text message with the word ABHELP to 4664, and 100 per cent will go to the Red Cross.

The prime minister also spoke to Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi, who provided an update on the situation in his city, which includes Harper’s riding of Calgary Southwest.

Harper again promised Nenshi that the federal government will do all it can to help.

The mayor says the worst flooding is yet to come even as people flee to higher ground to escape the waters brimming out of the Bow and Elbow rivers.

Officials say as many as 100,000 people may have left their homes.
