Robert Downey Jr. signs on for 2 more ‘Avengers’ movies

Robert Downey Jr. has signed on for two more movies in the Avengers franchise, Marvel announced Thursday.

The Iron Man actor will return for the studio’s next installment in the superhero franchise, which will hit theatres in 2015.

The Avengers 2 is being written and directed by Joss Whedon. Whedon also wrote and directed the first Avengers movie and created the TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,  which is set in the Marvel universe.

Securing Downey was a no-brainer for Marvel. According to the studio, his last two Marvel movies — 2012’s The Avengers and this year’s Iron Man 3 — rank as two of the top five grossing films of all time, collectively earning over US $2.7 billion worldwide to date.

Marvel hasn’t said anything about a possible Iron Man 4.
