MPP Margarett Best quitting Queen’s Park

Another Queen’s Park Liberal MPP is calling it quits.

Margarett Best, who has represented Scarborough-Guildwood since 2007, is resigning, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne said in a release on Thursday.

Described as a “passionate advocate for social equality” Best held several cabinet portfolios and served on many committees dedicated to poverty reduction and social health.

“Throughout her political and community involvements, Margarett has proved herself as a distinguished role model, a proud mother and a strong voice for Ontario’s under-represented communities,” Wynne said in the release. “I wish Margarett all the very best in this new phase of her life and career.”

Best, who was a lawyer and community activist before being elected, didn’t say what she plans on doing next, but thanked her constituents for their support.

“It was an honour to serve each and every one of you as your Member of Provincial Parliament and to represent such a diverse community.”

Wynne will now have to call byelections in five provincial ridings.

Former finance minister Dwight Duncan, former energy minister Chris Bentley as well as former premier Dalton McGuinty and former education minister Laurel Broten have all decided to leave political life.
