Drinking a concern at Trinity Bellwoods park

Public drinking is becoming a concern at Trinity Bellwoods Park in the city’s west end and there will be a meeting Thursday night to discuss the issue.
Coun. Mike Layton, Toronto Police and city representatives will hold the meeting and members of the Trinity Bellwoods Community Association (TBCA) will also attend.
The meeting has already sparked complaints on the group’s website.
“The best outcome of this meeting would be to formally allow the consumption of alcoholic beverages in the park,” a man named Ian Miller posted online.
Many more commenters agreed, with one person contrasting the relatively lowkey “day-drinking” at the park to a Friday night in Little Italy.
“I do not have a problem with adults choosing to drink in Trinity Bellwoods park. I go there at least once a week and whether I am drinking or not, I have never felt unsafe when in the space,” Eric Samuel Levitt wrote.
“To be honest, I generally feel less safe walking along College Street on a Friday night than I do in the park.”
Drinking in public is not allowed in Toronto and can carry a $125 fine. However, it’s a common sight at Trinity Bellwoods and other city parks.
The Toronto Star reports that there has been a rise in complaints about alcohol use in the park, leading to more police and bylaw officers in the area and prompting the meeting.
The meeting will be held at the Trinity Community Recreation Centre at 155 Crawford St. at 6 p.m.
