Puppies rescued from Scarborough parking lot after backyard escape

A litter of German shepherd puppies has been rescued from a supermarket parking lot in Scarborough.

Toronto police said they got a call around 12:45 a.m. Friday about two dogs and their six pups wandering in the lot of the Highland Farms near Lawrence Avenue East and Meadowvale Road.

Officers said the owner realized his dogs were gone and called them. He said they had managed to escape from their backyard pen.

Other than being a bit dehydrated and hungry, the animals were in good health.

“We were fortunate to have a canine unit on scene that had some dog treats and some water,” Sgt. Mark Yeandale said. “We were able to accommodate them, give them some water and some food.”

The dogs were taken to the Toronto Animal Services shelter on Sheppard Avenue West and the owner picked them up later in the morning.
