Woman charged after pedestrian killed in Markham

A woman has been charged after a pedestrian was killed and another was critically injured in Markham on Thursday night.

The collision happened at Elson Street and Markham Road, just north of Steeles Avenue, around 6:40 p.m. Police say a Toyota Matrix travelling southbound on Markham allegedly entered the intersection at Elson on a red light, striking a Toyota Camry that was trying to turn left.

York regional police say Matrix driver hit the Camry before losing control and striking two women. A 61-year-old woman died while being taken to hospital. The second woman, 48, remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The Camry driver wasn’t injured.

Shabana Ahmed, 55, of Markham has been charged with dangerous driving, dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm.
