Just two days after signal problems brought the morning rush hour to a near standstill, the TTC has announced it has major work planned for the Yonge-University subway line in October.
The following closures are scheduled for nine days in October:
- Bloor to St. George stations — Saturday, Oct. 12 to Monday, Oct. 14 (Thanksgiving Day)
- King to Osgoode — Tuesday, Oct. 15 to Friday, Oct. 18
- Bloor to St. George — Saturday, Oct. 19 to Sunday, Oct. 20
Shuttle buses will be running.
The TTC is replacing its aging signal system on the entire Yonge-University-Spadina line and says more closures will be announced. The job should be finished by 2018.
“While there is no good date to close a portion of the subway, the TTC appreciates and thanks all of its customers, businesses and the public-at-large for their patience and understanding as this work progresses,” the TTC said in a statement.
“Critical subway infrastructure — be it signal systems, tunnel structures or track beds — requires constant maintenance and, after more than half a century of service in some cases, full replacement. When complete, the subway system will be more reliable, efficient and provide greater capacity for the TTC’s 1.7 million daily riders.”
