1 dead, 1 seriously injured in Whitby collision

A 29-year-old woman is dead after a serious two-vehicle collision in Whitby Saturday afternoon.

Police say a red Chevrolet pickup truck and a black Pontiac G5 were travelling northbound on Lakeridge Road near Winchester Road shortly before 3:45 p.m.

The vehicles were in a long line of traffic due to construction in the area.

The truck then made a u-turn and began travelling southbound on the road. The driver of the Pontiac also decided to turn around, causing the vehicle to enter the path of the oncoming truck. The two vehicles collided and both came to rest on the shoulder of the road.

The victim, who was a passenger in the Pontiac, succumbed to her injuries.

The 29-year-old driver of the Pontiac was taken to a local hospital and then transported to Sunnybrook with serious injuries.

The 26-year-old driver of the pickup trick as well as a 22-year-old passenger and a three-year-old child were taken to an Ajax hospital for observation and released.

Police told CityNews speed is believed to be a factor in the crash.

The intersection was closed for several hours while police investigated.

There has been no word on charges.
