Heat alert issued for Toronto

The City of Toronto has issued a heat alert with the mercury expected to surpass 30 C on Monday.

“We’re looking at temperatures in the lower 30s and Humidex values in the 40s,” CityNews meteorologist Adam Stiles said Monday.

“We’re due for sunshine in the GTA but there are chances for a couple of pop-up showers and thunderstorms throughout southern Ontario,” he said.

City officials are also asking people to call on or visit those who may be vulnerable to the heat, especially isolated adults, seniors and the chronically ill.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for the GTA and much of southern Ontario on Sunday warning of afternoon temperatures pushing 30 C, which felt hotter with the humidity.

The UV index will also be very high on Monday.

A cold front is expected to move into southern Ontario late Thursday and will bring temperatures back in the seasonal range.
