‘Despicable Me 2’ remains No. 1 at weekend box office

Animated children’s movie Despicable Me 2 topped the weekend box office for the second week in a row, raking in $44.7 million US.

The movie made $82 million in its first week, one of the highest openings ever for an animated film. According to movie-tracking website BoxOfficeMojo.com, the sequel is on course to pass the original film’s haul of $251.5 million total by Friday.

In second place was another sequel, Adam Sandler’s Grown Ups 2. That movie took in $42 million. Sandler co-wrote and produced the movie, and also stars in it alongside Chris Rock, David Spade and Kevin James.

The movie follows the four men as they return to their hometown with their families.

Pacific Rim, which was filmed in Toronto, made $38 million for a third-place finish.

The Guillermo del Toro-directed movie follows a rag tag crew of pilots who man giant robots in a battle against undersea aliens.
