Toddler opens car door, falls out onto highway

A two-year-old girl is lucky to be alive after she fell out of a vehicle onto the highway.

Police told CityNews that around 6 p.m. Tuesday the vehicle was travelling on the Lawrence Avenue East onramp to the southbound Don Valley Parkway when the child opened the car door and fell.

“A child in the back seat was playing with the door handle and managed to open the door,” Sgt. Larry Zimmerman with Traffic Services told CityNews. “Of course the gravity forced the child out while still in the seat.”

Officials say the child was sitting in an unsecured car seat at the time.

“It’s pretty obvious here that the child’s seat was not strapped in or it wouldn’t have come out of the car,” Sgt. Zimmerman explained.

Paramedics told CityNews the toddler did not appear to have any injuries but was transported to hospital as a precaution.

Police say charges will be laid.

The investigation is ongoing.
